The American-born French actress, Beatrice Rosen who played Natascha in The Dark Knight and appeared in Peaceful Warrior , will now be seen in Backstrom , a subversive and comic-crime show, about an offensive, abrasive, and brilliant detective, Everett Backstrom.

Backstrom is brought back from a tenure of five years at the traffic division, where he was ‘banished’ for his offensive behaviour, to run the Portland Police Bureau's Special Crimes Unit (S.C.U.). As he tries to solve Portland’s most sensitive and serious cases, he tries and fails to change his own self-destructive behaviour.

Beatrice plays Nadia Paquet, beautiful French immigrant, who can navigate both cyberspace and legal bureaucracy with equal ease. In a telephonic interview, Beatrice speaks of her role: “She’s a civilian support in the SUT team. She is a very strong and independent woman. There is a whole back story to the character. She has a great sense of humour and the only one who gets Backstrom.”

Beatrice says Backstrom hooks the viewer for its multi-layered plot. “It has many different aspects, comedy and crime. And it’s not politically correct.” Backstrom’s character makes the show interesting, says Beatrice. “You might think he is a horrible person, but you also see his depth. There is nothing more boring than a predictable character.”

The series is based on the hit book series by the Swedish criminologist and novelist, Leif G.W. Persson. Beatrice says she didn’t read the book to prepare for her role. “The characters are loosely adapted from the book. In the original, Nadia was Russian. But in the show, Nadia is in Portland and in the show, they’ve made her French.”

Beatrice was born in New York City and raised in Paris. She has acted in both French and American films, but she says that it didn’t really feel as though they’re completely different genres. “Every country is culturally different. Acting is full of diversity. The best thing about this career is that you are never bored. Acting was really a calling. I started acting in Paris, since school. I did acting classes. Then I got some opportunities in the US. Everything happened naturally, I followed my passion.” She adds that she has even shot in India for three months. “I shot in Madhya Pradesh for a period piece. The landscape where we filmed is so untouched. And I never had a problem with the food. I love spicy food!”

Beatrice has dabbled in writing too, which she says is a whole new world compared to acting. “I fell in love with writing. I have co-written a script for a feature film. It is in pre production.”

Backstrom, Season 1, is aired every Monday, at 9 pm, on Star World Premiere HD.
