Supreme Upper Crust is a new restaurant on the Kuravankonam-Marappalam road. The entrance, with its cheerful awnings, reminds one of the French patisseries and restaurants one sees on various food channels. Step inside and one is charmed by its cosy earthen tones. A fine dining restaurant, the ubiquitous parotta and fried chicken and fried rice and gobi Manchurian have not crept into this restaurant’s menu. Instead, Upper Crust specialises in Continental food.
Our waiter brings us the menu and we go on an ordering spree. The menu lists a choice of soups, salads, potato dishes and even eggs cooked in different ways, we, however, decide to go for the mains.
A bread counter holds neatly arranged breads like focaccia, multi-grain bread, mini-baguette with blue cheese, raisin and walnut, sunflower seed bread and sour dough, while cookies and cakes in attractive packets and flavoured cashewnuts and almonds in containers of different sizes rest neatly on shelves. The counter that captures the eye, however, is the one which displays a plethora of desserts. It’s a riot of colours!
Soon, the dishes we order arrive one after the one. The vegetarians seem pleased with their vegetable sandwiches. I take a bite from one and am surprised with the generous filling. The rye bread with kalamata olives and carrots used for the sandwich adds extra texture to the dish.
The pasta arrabiata is a delightfully simple dish with loads of flavour. The hint of chilli blends well with the tomato. Served with a generous sprinkling of grated cheese, the pasta is satisfying. Instead of a pate, it is diced chicken tossed in a slightly savoury sauce that is served in grilled chicken burger. The side of salad is robust and smoky with a sweet finish. However, my favourite on the burger plate is the potato wedges – crispy on the outside and tender in the middle.
The Norwegian grilled salmon could use with a bit more seasoning and so does the accompanying mashed potato. I could barely taste the dollop of anchovy balut sauce that was smeared at the bottom of the fish. While the serving size of the dishes is not as large as the ones we are used to in most other restaurants, the meals are actually filling if you are not too hungry.
All the desserts we order are a hit at the table. While the opera cake has nice, bold coffee flavour going through it, the cosmopolitan cake is an explosion of flavours with its carrot and cake base, Philadelphia cheese mousse in the middle and mix berry topping. The brownie-like base in the peanut butter mousse helps cut the sweetness of the mousse, which I dig into with gusto. A wonderful gourmet experience in itself.
