There’s a reason why pink is commonly associated with health, and the pink ribbon, more importantly, has been associated with breast cancer awareness since 1991 when the Susan G. Komen Foundation handed out pink ribbons to participants in New York City.
Back home as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness month, the ITC Sheraton Park Hotel and Towers had a ‘Pinkfast Breakfast’ to educate people about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. At 8.30 a.m. at the poolside, each table had a menu card in shocking pink that described the various foods classified by colour: yellow, green, orange, red, white and purple. Of these, Chef Praveen Anand said, “White and purple foods help in reducing the risk of breast cancer as white foods aid in the regeneration of white cells and purple foods promote microcirculation.” He also added that a well-balanced diet is important to keep ailments at bay and that they’ve put together the menu after a lot of research.
Sasmita P. Writer, sous chef, had an important role to play in putting together the menu. As someone who has breast cancer survivors in her family, she said that she had a “personal connect to the breakfast,” and that she started the research “two-three months ago”.
The menu included small notes on why one should consume certain foods such as pro-biotic milk, salmon, flax seeds, pomegranate and more. The dishes also had small indicators in the colour group that they belonged to. According to general manager N. Krishnan, the breakfast was not a one-off thing, and they plan to introduce it at Cappuccino, their 24-hour restaurant. Guests can walk in and opt for dishes that were included at the Pinkfast Breakfast.
