Beat the heat: Ice-cream from Amadora

It all started when I saw a portly old policeman walking down the road, taking giant, macho strides, all the while engrossed in an orange ice lolly. After every slurp or two, he would stop and admiringly look at it. And then, I wanted one too: it seemed like the perfect way to deal with the summer that is slowly, but steadily, creeping upon us. With not a single ice cream cart in sight, I drove on and then, there it was... not a cart, but an entire ice cream parlour — Amadora’s new outlet on ECR.

It's a two-level place built over 2,000 square ft with lots of sunlight streaming in. The counters displaying the flavours of the day are much like a centrepiece in this otherwise minimalistic outlet. 

It's amazing what an ice-cream can do: it turns even the beefiest, most self-assured men into clueless children as they try to decide on a flavour — in this case, my friend who joined me for a quick dessert. "Salted caramel! No wait, filter kaapi. No, I want Twix cake with vanilla ice cream and an Ice cream sandwich." After what seemed like an eternity, he finally decided. I went for the Hail Mary sundae and secretly knew her miracles were the only thing that could keep me from piling on weight with so many calories. Meanwhile, upstairs, a giggly bunch of kids with hats and flouncy dresses were celebrating a birthday party and I could hear them comparing flavours. The store stocks 14-18 flavours every day and they keep changing every week.

A home-grown gourmet ice cream brand, Amadora was started in the city by Deepak Suresh three years ago. With the centre of the city moving, he decided to open a store on the ECR and now caters to clientele from neighbouring IT companies, schools and residents living along the stretch. 

The Twix cake was chewy and caramelly; much like the chocolate, but cloyingly sweet. The flavourful five-bean vanilla ice-cream helped balance the sweetness. To break the monotony of all things sweet, we also got a sandwich. It's called 10 a.m. and had an interesting combination of bocconcini and curry leaves pesto with an occasional tang of tart pomegranate molasses.

The Hail Mary arrived in a plastic glass and consisted of...hold your breath...a top layer of underbaked cake, vanilla and chocolate ice cream, salted caramel, butter caramel swirl and fudge ripple. It was potent with a whole mix of delicious flavours and could keep hunger pangs at bay for a while. It’s better when it’s all molten.

As we plundered through it, we realised we were over ambitious with our order. The waiter understood the importance of leisurely enjoying a dessert; he waited till we were through with what was on our table before getting the ice-cream sandwich. A blob of nutty, butterscotch ice-cream squished between two chocolate chip cookies with chocolate sauce drizzled on it...this was clearly the pick of the lot. We demolished it all and walked out of Amadora like slobs, but we were all set to take on the crackling afternoon sun.
