Pearl Spot fish, known as ‘karimeen’ in Kerala, is one of the most widely available varieties in the South, especially in the Kerala backwaters, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

It is a low-fat, high-protein food, rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which keep our heart and brain healthy.

This variety is also rich in Vitamin D and riboflavin, as well as in minerals such as calcium and phosphorus.

Omega-3 fatty acids in fish have many health benefits. Hence, regular consumption of fish is heart-healthy as it helps lower blood pressure.

Now, for a recipe.

Grilled Karimeen (Karimeen marinated with signature spices)

Ingredients

Cloves: 6-7

Peppercorns: 5 gm

Cumin seeds: 5 gm

Cinnamon sticks: 4-5

Coriander seeds whole: 10 gm

Red chillies: 4-5

Cardamom: 2

Garlic: 4 gm

Turmeric powder: 2 gm

Oil: 25 ml

Water: 100 ml

Method: Heat a pan and add a tablespoon of oil and roast all the dry spices lightly. Make a fine paste in a mixer. Marinate the karimeen fish with local spices. Allow it to stand for 1-2 hours. Grill on a hot plate on both sides. Serve hot.
