The strawberry preserve sits cosily atop the cupcake while the glaze on the apple pie gives it an appealing sheen. Fondant cakes, cupcakes, truffles, pies, brownies, chessecakes, pound cakes… — the list of Shriya Jhaver desserts goes on. A lawyer-turned-baker, she has been running Shriya’s Patisserie from her home in Santhome since 2009.

Shriya began baking as a hobby, when she was studying Law in Delhi. With appreciation pouring in from friends and family, she decided to pursue a certification in baking and moved to London to study at Le Cordon Bleu. “I decided to study baking because I wanted to learn the techniques and methods that professional bakers used.” After this, she moved to Chennai and began baking full-time. “Over the years, the response has been really good. And, I haven’t even marketed myself. All the orders are through Facebook and word-of-mouth.”

While she does theme fondant cakes for weddings, birthdays and other occasions, her chocolate truffle and ice cream cakes are rather popular, she says. “I’ve done all sorts of themes; lady bird, Godfather, Jungle Book and handbag cake.” “Most of my ingredients are imported and I try to use the same ones I used when I was in London. The cost factor is a challenge in Chennai, but I’ve realised that people like quality products. The first time they order, they are surprised. But once they taste the cakes, they call again.”

She hopes to open a full-fledged bakery soon. “As of now, I deliver most cakes in a day. A theme cake may take about three or four days.” Shriya’s Patisserie also does eggless and sugar-free desserts on order.
