Nellikai Sadam is an easy-to-make one-pot meal.

I learnt this recipe from my grandmother who used to prepare this recipe very frequently. Nellikai Sadam is an easy-to-make one-pot meal. Since gooseberries are a good source of Vitamin C, this rice helps healthy hair growth.

Ingredients

Gooseberries - 1/4 cup

Cooked rice - 2 cups

Turmeric powder - 1/8 tsp

Salt - to taste

Oil - 1 tbsp

Mustard seeds - 1 tsp

Black gram - 1/4 tsp

Bengal gram - 2 tsp

Peanuts - 2 tbsp

Red chillies, split - 2

Curry leaves - a few

Asafoetida - a pinch

Sesame oil - 1 tsp

Cooking instructions

Cook the rice in a way that the grains can be separated. Spread it on a plate and fluff it with a fork to separate the grains. Wash the gooseberries and grate it in a grater. Discard the seeds. Set aside.

Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. Let it splutter. Add black gram, Bengal gram, peanuts, red chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida. Sauté till they turn golden brown.

Add grated gooseberries, turmeric powder and salt. Sauté till the gooseberries shrink. Add cooked rice to the pan and mix well till the rice is well coated with the tempered items and gooseberries. Adjust salt if required. Switch off the stove.

Mix sesame oil to get a nice aroma. Cover it for 3-5 minutes. Serve hot.
