A hot cup of luscious brown drinking chocolate with pink and white marshmallows bobbing in it, a chocolate brownie dripping chocolate syrup and a waffle drizzled with chocolate sauce with a scoop of ice cream sitting on it…what else can it be at a place called Chocolate Factory?
If you want to overdose on chocolate – fudge cupcakes, waffles, chocolate chip cookies, pralines, brownies, hot and cold chocolate, ice cream, mousse and much more then Chocolate Factory on Market Road (near Kombara junctions behind the High Court side) opposite Catholic Syrian Bank is the place.
The best part? The chocolate used is made from cocoa beans at the ‘factory’ by Commander (Retd.) C.T. Kuruvilla who runs the chocolate eatery. It started out small, as a chocolate-making passion, and then grew into a brand of chocolates, Cocoacraft and then into Chocolate Factory.
No artificial chocolate compounds are used, neither are preservatives added just pure chocolate made in-house, says Rosemary, Kuruvilla’s wife. Apart from confection, the chocolate factory makes and stocks its brand (Cocoacraft) of couverture for chocolatiers and bakers, from milk chocolate and 52 per cent dark chocolate to 85 per cent bitter chocolate, in slabs of one kg each, and blocks of 15 kg for bulk buyers.

The ‘chocolate factory’ dedicated to chocolate confections is one-of-its-kind in the city. Juliette Binochet and Johnny Depp from the film Chocolat occupy place of pride, in poster. Interiors are cheerful and bright, with orange and green chairs giving company to yellow and green tables. It is a chocolate lover’s paradise. It is hard to imagine this cheerful place as a godown, which it once used to be, says Rosemary.
The brownie with chocolate sauce with chocolate syrup dripping down its side is a must-have. Add ice cream to it and you traverse the path of sinful eating.
Sipping on the hot chocolate, chasing marshmallows with a spoon, and mouthing them with a whoop of joy are reminiscent of a time long ago. And it is one of the very few places in the city which has waffles.
