Milk is always referred to as a complete and natural food. Being the most nourishing of all foods, milk is a favourite drink of people throughout the world. Milk is an excellent source of all nutrients which are in proper proportions and work as a team to keep the body healthy and strong.
Vitamin rich
Milk provides high quality protein, vitamins like A, B12, D, Riboflavin, and minerals like calcium, phosphorus, zinc and magnesium. Casein is an important protein that is found only in milk.
Whole milk cream and yogurt contain saturated fat and are good for health. Milk can be consumed in different forms – yogurt, cheese, buttermilk, ice-creams, etc.
Milk is available in different forms such as regular whole milk, low fat, skimmed milk, cultured buttermilk, cream, sour cream etc.
The main drawback of milk is that it can cause indigestion in people with lactose intolerance. Milk protein casein may trigger allergic reactions like nasal and sinus congestion especially in children.
Low fat milk and milk products are low in cholesterol and high in protein. Those who are health conscious can drink low fat yogurt or skimmed milk for a powerful nutritional punch.
CHOCOLATE MILK SHAKE
Ingredients
Milk – 1 glass
(cooled)
Dark chocolate – 25 gm
Oreo biscuits – 3
Nuts – 3
Ice cubes – 3
Chocolate for garnish
Method
Put all the ingredients into a blender. Blend for 2 minutes and transfer it into a long glass. Serve with some chocolate shavings on top.
BAKED CUSTARD PUDDING WITH FRUITS
Ingredients
Milk – 600 ml
Butter – 25 gm
Lemon rind – 1 tbsp
Whole eggs – 2
Egg yolks – 2
Nutmeg powder –
2 pinches
Sugar – 3 tbsp
Method
Butter a pie dish.
In a sauce pan, bring the milk and lemon rind to just below boiling point, then remove from fire.
Beat eggs and yolks in a bowl using a fork for 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in the sugar. Pour the milk, add nutmeg powder and stir well. Strain the custard into the pie dish.
Sprinkle butter over the custard.
Set the pie dish in a shallow baking tin with about 1” of cold water. Bake the custard in a pre-heated oven at 1800c for about 35 minutes until the custard is set and the top is golden brown. Serve with fresh fruits in sugar syrup.
