Smooth ride: A sample of The Passion Fruit’s concoctions

Pink Puppy is pink, smooth and no, it is not a pink coloured canine. It is a deliciously smooth concoction of strawberries and ice cream, the kind that gives a ‘sweet’ high.

Something Special is special indeed for a smoothie loaded with dry fruits and ice cream, and is a tad lighter in pink.

These are just some of the fruit cocktails, fruit juices, smoothies and desserts available at The Passion Fruit in Panampilly Nagar next to Subway.

There is an ‘unmissable’ profusion of all things strawberry such as juices, fruit cocktails and desserts because it is a “celebration of the strawberries” and they are in season.

The strawberry concoctions are the fastest moving items on the menu say the staff. Sunshine (strawberry with orange juice) is one among the popular fruit juices. A glance at the menu is tempting. There are the simpler types of juices which are de riguer and then there the juices and shakes with a twist. Aside from the fruit juices there are plenty of shakes such as carrot, papaya, badam, dry fruit etc.

Almost every fruit available is there to be had in juice or shake form. If mishmash is not your idea of a juice then there are regular plain ones, however if you like a bit, or more than a bit, of drama, then there are juices such as the exotically named Mediterranean Punch (pineapple juice with a dash of mint), Beauty Queen (pineapple blended with carrot) Red Fire (combines grapes and ginger)…it is a rather exhaustive list.

The first shop opened at Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram in 2004, where it has two outlets today.

The Kochi shop has been open for a month-and-a-half and slowly acquiring fans says Shyam Jacob, the man behind The Passion Fruit. He says some of the juices and shakes on the menu are his mother Janiz’s innovations.

He says, “my mother used to make all kinds of juices, desserts and milk shakes. My brother and I used to be at the ‘receiving end’ of her experiments and we used to enjoy it. She used to mix up a couple of fruits and come up with interesting stuff.”

The ‘Specials’ section lists delectables with various combinations of cakes and ice creams and many types of faloodas.

And therefore we zero in on the cake and chocolate ice cream combination. Ample proof that sometimes straightforward in food is good. A scoop of chocolate ice cream with a slice of chocolate can’t really go wrong, it as comfortable as comfort food gets.
