Fasting and feasting

Fruit Forest in Gurgaon offers healthy, fruity options in a soothing ambience

July 17, 2013 06:59 pm | Updated 06:59 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

It’s the holy month of Ramzan, that time of the year when I fast for 30 days and normally restrict myself to homemade food. But sometimes an invitation to review food is so tempting that I pay an occasional visit. This was one such case, I was invited to review the recently opened Fruit Forest in Gurgaon. Its name seemed apt since I do Iftar (break my fast) with fruits only.

Located next to the huge Bikanerwala in Gurgaon’s Sector 29 market, Fruit Forest has its own loyal clientele. The food selection is quite different. The menu is full of healthy and light delicacies. The ambience is very soothing and the place has a positive vibe.

I started with a mango, guava and strawberry shake topped with marshmallows. And what a refreshing shake it was! The best part was, it was not too sweet and was served chilled — the way I like my shakes to be. I took fruit coleslaw with raisins and a cous cous salad along. It felt so healthy that I was inspired to go on a diet and try to reduce some weight.

Coleslaw was made out of finely sliced fruits. And cous cous was full of olives and finely chopped veggies. I finished my bowl of salad without taking a break. Seeing the option of fruit lollies, I asked the chef to prepare a kiwi flavoured one for me. Eating a lolly made hygienically in a restaurant was a different experience altogether. But to be honest, I missed a bit my roadside kala khatta.

I then went for a couple of wraps and paninis. First to be served was a grilled vegetable panini with pesto. It was tasty and had some good stuffing of fresh green veggies. I loved the broccoli in it. Next was the chilli wada wrap with crushed wadas stuffed in it. Spice lovers should opt for it. It was very spicy and forced me to order a chocolate shake. To follow it was a grilled apple and Nutella panini. It had a very unique taste to it. Grilled green apple slices went well with the sweetness of Nutella. All those vegetarians missing their paneer and soya-based dishes should opt for their cottage cheese and soya stuffed wraps.

Despite feeling quite stuffed, I ordered a bowl of mega fruit sundae and a glass of fruit faluda. It was a beautifully presented dessert that also gave me the strength to fast the next day.

Meal for two: Rs. 600
