Hardly a month old Café Blue Tomato at Rajouri Garden, J block market is a pleasant surprise for Delhiites this summer. Its vibrant and refreshing colours give the café a positive vibe. Blue Tomato is a very rare breed of tomatoes which have great antioxidants. So is the case with Café Blue Tomato which is a rare open café in that vicinity.
Café Blue Tomato is not just another café, it’s the baby of Chef Dheeraj Mangothra who has worked at various places as an executive chef and bring loads of experience with him. Menu of the café reflects deep continental influences which the Chef has imbibed during his education days overseas.
I tasted cream of garlic with chicken soup to start my gastronomic journey. Having nice creamy texture soup was excellent and perfectly seasoned. Fish finger and lettuce salad to follow was refreshing with fish fingers adding a nice crunch to the salad.
List of starters was not an extensive one but a selection of handpicked dishes which are Chef Dheeraj’s favourite. Grilled cottage cheese with basil had subtle flavours having a nice balance. Chicken wings one of the favourites nowadays in cafes was done with a tweak. Instead of the regular BBQ sauce they were done in honey thyme and served with orange curry chutney. Honey gave a nice glaze to the wings which made them even more tempting. Chicken satay had nice flavour but was slightly chewy in texture.
Out of the sandwiches and burgers by default I opted for a whooper lamb burger. Not as big as I was expecting but quite decent with three small lamb patties in it. This in a way made it convenient to eat. But I missed that feeling of biting into a nice thick lamb patty.
Tasting a nice thin crust pizza before main course was not a bad idea. Chef topped it with chicken chunks to make it filling though the base had scope of improvement.
Picatta milenaise and chicken lasagna in the end were worth eating. Picatta done with chicken needs a special mention as it had perfect coating of parmesan and egg. Served with smooth tomato spaghetti was a nice idea which turned out to be a perfect combination.
Chocolate fudge sundae helped me to end on a refreshing note satisfying my cravings for desserts.
