Imagine a Sunday lunch with a stream of steaming dim sums and cups of Chinese tea. And dim sum lovers will do anything to get a bite of these steamed delights in their newly introduced Yum Cha. Yum Cha literally means drinking tea and the word is used to describe the entire dining experience, especially in contemporary Cantonese. It is usually served in the mornings until noon time at Chinese restaurants and at specialty dim sum eateries.
In a traditional Yum Cha, dishes come in small portions and include meat, seafood, and vegetables, desserts and fruits as well. The items are usually served in a small steamer basket or on a small plate.
To bring the same experience for dim sum lovers in the city, Golden Dragon, the Chinese restaurant at Taj Krishna is introducing Yum Cha in their restaurant. To restrict this as a leisurely experience Yum Cha is fixed as a Sunday luncheon.
But there is a little tweak here. Since Hyderbadis are used to eating wholesome lunches especially on a Sunday, the chefs have decided to throw in a few surprise elements to the Yum Cha.
At the very beginning as the tradition goes, Chinese tea is served in the traditional tea cups. And no sooner one’s done with three sips the delightful baskets arrive. And from them comes out the tiny, a little bigger than bite size dim sums.
The very first look at these will make you realise what you have been missing if you didn’t try the dim sum. The dim sum which is easily available mostly has a cover which is made of flour. But traditionally dim sum covers are made of a combination of flours and mixes to give it an almost transparent look.
To enhance the visual appeal of these dim sums, chef at Golden Dragon add fine juliennes of few bright veggies to the meat and fish and sea food dim sums. The homemade dips which are freshly made make the eating experience far more pleasure bale. In the meantime keep the tea cups coming, as there is more to eat, yes, after the variety of dim sum basket. And, if in the mood for baos? Then use your charm and tell the chef how you are missing them and the chef might be generous enough to bring out some spicy non veg baos.
After this there are some starters to come. The sweet crispy chicken and the glazed spare ribs are a double hit. The ribs just melt in your mouth like the way you see on TLC and the sweet crispy chicken is more than a delight. If there is space for more, go for the clear noodle soup and the main course which is a choice of either noodles or rice. Dessert is a dim sum again which is placed over a bed or darsaan (sweet crispy ribbon).
