Delhi has got its fresh new bistro with a French look and a French name. La Crepe Rit was recently launched at the posh Saket’s District Centre. Its name assured me one thing, finally now I can have tasty Crepes in Delhi. La Crepe Rit or ‘The Laughing Pancakes’ was originally founded in 1991 by a Frenchman called Prof Philippe Delcloque on Liverpool’s Albert Dock waterfront. And thankfully the legacy has been brought to India by two divas Harpreet Anand and Ritu Rakheja.

I have cravings for crepe since childhood. Whenever my aunt who stays in Belgium used to come for vacations she used to make some delicious crepes for me. As a kid I used to call it a ‘meethi roti’ topped with crème and fruits.

Apart from crepes, La Crepe Rit also offers an exquisite range of French and Italian dishes. I started with the soup of the day which was a mushroom soup served with fresh farmhouse bread. Soup was pretty decent but the accompanying bread was tasty and crisp. I followed my soup with marinated olives and a tuna in mayonnaise salad. While ordering marinated olives seemed tempting to me and I thought something innovative would come out but sadly I got simple olives and was unable to find any flavours of marination. Tuna salad had more of veggies and very little of tuna in it.

Fresh and tasty

Grana padano and fresh olives were tasty. One of the most famous cheeses of Italy blended well with olives. Next came in the deep fried fish goujons which I liked as it had a nice basa strip fried to perfection and having a crisp coating. I enjoyed it with the tartar sauce. Italian meat balls with sweet chilli dip were presented beautifully. It was tasty when I put it in my mouth but once the dip was cleared, the meat ball was bland. Pizzas were tasty and crisp. Oven fresh croissants and baguettes are also worth a try. I also tried savoury gallettes, a healthier option compared to pizzas as it is made with buckwheat flour.

All said and done, the USP of the bistro are its crepes. Traditional French pancakes popular around the globe, made with white flour, sugar and milk were made to perfection and presented beautifully. Banana and chocolate crepe was a delight to watch and divine to taste. Bananas cut perfectly, stuffed in crepe, topped with chocolate was yummy. To enjoy it more I had it with an ice cream scoop.
