For many people, hair loss in has serious implications, given its personal, social and professional ramifications. Hair loss is seen more often in men than in women, but today even younger people are falling prey to this problem.

The most common type of hair loss is Androgenetic alopecia, which occurs due to heredity, androgens and age. Hair loss can also occur due to hormonal problems, illnesses, reaction to some medications, environmental factors like exposure to polluted environment, excessive attrition during brushing or combing, chemical treatments, inappropriate or insufficient hair care, excessive exposure to UV rays, repeated contact with sea or chlorinated water and excessive smoking and a diet with insufficient proteins, vitamins, minerals or trace elements.

To allow hair to grow normally, a balanced diet that includes a variety of food groups like fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, pulses, sprouts, cereals and dairy products is crucial. The role of water is also catalytic; the daily consumption of water should be around 1.5 to two litres a day. Statistics reveal that 90 per cent of people experiencing hair loss consume less than one fruit a day, very few salads, drink inadequate water and omit breakfast or a meal a day.

Apart from ensuring a proper diet and hydration, yoga and meditation also helps reduce hair loss and leads to healthy hair growth. This is apart from the benefits to overall health, both physical and mental. Yoga enhances circulation of blood in the scalp, improves digestion and reduces anxiety and stress levels. The following asanas and pranayama can help protect your crowning glory.

Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward dog pose): Increases blood and oxygen circulation to the head and face and helps stimulate the scalp’s nerves.

Uttanasana (Forward bend): Stretches the hamstrings and the abdomen muscles; aids the body to switch from the sympathetic to the parasympathetic nervous system to help you relax.

Ustrasana (Camel pose): Increases the blood circulation to the head and heart.

Sarvangasana (Shoulder stand): Regulates the functioning of thyroid gland and promotes hair growth.

Vajra Asana (Diamond pose): Reduces stress levels at a faster pace.

Kapalbhati Pranayama: Helps to oxygenate the head and strengthens the abdominal muscles.
