Diet plays an important role in maintaining the skin’s tone and moisture. Proper hydration is essential to ensure that the skin gets enough moisture and nutrients. So drink around eight glasses of water a day. Further, omega-3 fatty acids, naturally present in the skin’s external layer, help keep the skin intact and prevent loss of important nutrients and water. Foods that contain this essential nutrient include walnuts, salmon and flaxseed.
Lifestyle changes help significantly. Regular exercise not only helps reduce stress, but also increases blood flow to the skin, thereby allowing more nutrients to be delivered.
Skincare routine has to be changed specifically for the season. First, avoid a foaming wash. Foam usually means that sulphate detergents are present, which are known to both cause and worsen dry skin. Look for gentle cleansing lotions, creams or oils with soothing properties for the best results. Second, change your moisturiser. Look for a rich moisturising cream that will make your skin feel moist and supple, and use it as often as you need to. Finally, don’t forget sunscreen. The sun contains UVA and UVB rays, which reduce the moisture in the skin causing it to become drier. So look for an SPF of 30 and above with at least a PA++ rating.
