Bangalore will experience an authentic European fair when the Indo-German Urban Mela brings its blend of technology, science, art and culture to the city. As one of the key initiatives for the “Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities”, marking 60 years of Indo-German diplomatic ties, this is a fusion between the typical Indian mela and the German carnival.
Renowned installation artist and designer, Markus Heinsdorff, is the man behind the entire set-up at the Mela. Themed “StadtRäume – CitySpaces”, the fair will draw visitors into the effects of rapid urbanisation and the challenges of change in Indian and German cities today. Visual arts, science, education, technology and business come together to explore topics like mobility, energy, sustainable urban development, architecture, cultural space, education and urban art.
Dr. Ingo Karsten, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Bangalore said at the inaugural, “The Indo-German Urban Mela in Bangalore offers a glance on how the city of tomorrow could function: innovative approaches and smart solutions for the main topics of urban life like energy and water supply, respect for the environment, construction and urban planning, but also music, dance and entertainment at large.”
The Beergarden at the Mela will offer a feast of German delicacies and drinks. It is a replica of the quintessential German Biergarten, an important social space for friends and family to interact. Performances by heavy metal acts such as Arkadius and Kryptos, workshops in breakdance by Niels Storm, a dance act by Samir Akika and Attakkalari, Science Slam, Poetry Slam and an art workshop by Gaurav Juyal from “Art Attack” will be the main features.
The Mela creates a unique urban microcosm in the heart of every city it travels to. Mumbai was the first in line. After Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Pune will be queuing up for the experience.
Bottomline: The authentic European carnival brought alive on desi soil.
