Simple lifestyle modifications go a long way in preventing many types of cancer.

Stay away from extreme sun exposure: Too much UV radiation can damage the skin. Use sunscreen properly and stay out of the sun during peak hours to prevent skin cancer.

Practise safe sex: Do not have unprotected sex with many partners as it raises risk for Sexually Transmitted Diseases, AIDS and HPV. Certain strains of HPV have been linked to cervical cancer in women and penile and anal cancer in men.

Get regular tests: For women, a regular pap smear is one of the best tools to prevent cervical cancer. It can detect changes in the cervix before it become cancerous. For men, get a prostate examination to detect cancer early.

Eat a sensible diet: Studies have shown that diets high in animal fat increases risk factor for many types of cancer. A diet filled with fresh fruits and vegetables and low in animal fat is ideal for risk reduction.

Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke: We know that smoking is associated with lung cancer, but it is less commonly known that smokers also are prone to get colorectal cancer as well as kidney, pancreatic, cervical and stomach cancers.

Know your family history: Checking your family history of cancer is important to understand your risk factor for certain types of cancer. Cancers like breast, colon, ovarian, and possibly other types can be hereditary.
