The beginning of a year is always exciting and what makes it even more so is the glamour world. As we peer over the parapets of fashion trends 2010, we find a yearning for something different is contributing to the ultimate and unusual in terms of fashion.

“The year will be about the new standards of fashion, which shall be classy in appeal,” sums up Puneet Nanda, Design Head, Satya Paul. He adds, “2010 is going to welcome jump suits, hot pants and boy shorts. Conceptually mod saris like the Satya Paul trouser sari will be the latest and best in its genre. Other popular trends will include high split dresses, printed sari blouses, printed pants, sleeveless trench dresses, jodhpuri cuts and sheer fabrics.”

On the other hand designer Mandira Wirk believes that shoulders will be the focal interest through the year. “Invest in clothes with well-defined shoulders. There is a wide range of structured sleeves; look out for classic leg-of-mutton and other blowsy puff sleeve styles to add to your wardrobe. Evening dresses with innovative drapes will continue to dominate the season. Asymmetric one shoulder dresses will stay for the next season,” says Mandira.

Spring-Summer 2010

The season is just around the corner, so it becomes important to know the key styles. Sleek and sexy is a springtime look with soft and fluid silhouettes, which shout sophistication. “The season will see a lot of layering, pleating, draping and trench coat dresses in lighter fabrics specially cotton,” say young designer duo Dhruv and Pallavi. When it comes to colours, designers have created a gorgeous palette to select from. “Fluorescents are back with a bang: pinks, greens, oranges combined with ivories and splashes of neon's will dominate this spring,” say the duo.

And guess what? The classic jump suit is back again for another season. As skin is the in thing in summer, the one off shoulder style, sheer attires, lingerie inspired maxis, luxe chic, crystal embroideries shall be the biggest party looks. Hemlines are creeping up to shorter and giving way to knee length socks.

Autumn-Winter 2010

Autumn-Winter is the time to romance winter chills and wipe off the weariness of an entire year. This year oversized jackets are back in fashion again. The style phenomenon of mixing and mismatching continues. “Fitted and more of flares will prevail during the fall. Men can opt for double-breasted jackets. Lot of cut-out velvet patterns shall create a great fashion,” confirms designer Chirag Joshi.

The autumn-winter season will gravitate towards more sombre tones giving us greys, blacks and browns. “Elegant velvets in jewel colours will be the season's must-have pieces. Sexy silhouettes and shift dress for women is the fashion for the fall. It will also mark the debut of dress coats for women,” says Mandira Wirk.

As the recessionary trend is fading, so is monotony and gloominess; a perfect time to bring in the most outrageous colours into your wardrobe. Designer Suneet Varma says that although colours are personal the year shall remain colourful, whether summer or winter. As far as metallics are concerned, they will not shout fashion. The bling is understated but oranges, yellows, plums, purples and neons are here to stay. Whites and ivories will be the choice for summer and tones of red for winter.

Accessories

Your style statement always includes slinky fashion accessories too. Whether its jewellery, bags or shoes, all add to the perfect top-to-toe look. “When it comes to bags and clutches, the year will be all about classy and elegant. A big soft bag full of ruffles in suede or a bag covered with different types of studs will be the most fashionable and beautiful accessory in 2010,” says Dilip Kapur, president and owner, Hidesign.

The shoe story this year is about comfort and practical, aimed at those who understandfashion but would rather not be a slave to it and have an innate sense of style.

The key to looking good is to feel comfortable with what you're wearing. Clothes are in and out of fashion but what is important is to make a style statement and create something that is contemporary yet classy. Fashion predictions just become a mode to lead you to your style.
