Word Worlds will take a look at the art of translations, journeying through the linguistic landscape of India and seeing how translations were defined through in history. There will be exercises with texts as ancient as the Mahabharata, the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita and as modern as Sarah Joseph. Learn what a successful translation is. We will look at successful translations and finally discuss the concept of translation as re-writing.
MINI KRISHNAN is Editor - Translations at Oxford University Press. She sources and edits fiction, plays, autobiographies and biographies from 12 Indian languages into English. She was formerly with Macmillan India where she edited the Modern Indian Novels in Translation. So far she has edited 62 literary translations, four of which have won the Crossword Award for translation. She is an advocate of translation education in universities and colleges and is on the National Translation Mission, which operates under the National Knowledge Commission. She is the Founding Editor of the South Asian Women Writers Website hosted by the British Council and was literary advisor to The Hindu from 1992-98.
