The message conveyed by the students in Kodagu recently on food highlights the need and demand for food across the country and the world.
It has become all the more important and relevant when several parts of Karnataka are currently facing drought.
Holding banners and placards with the messages, “we have a right to eat, not to waste”, the students had gathered at Kushalnagar in the district. They not only shouted out the message but also imbibed vital lessons for themselves like consuming food only to satisfy their hunger and not otherwise.
Respect farmers
The Kodagu Zilla Panchayat has adopted a resolution to form “Aahara Samrakshana Abhiyana” team, laying stress on saving food from being wasted. It also contained another message - that farmers grew food in the country even under adverse conditions and their hard labour ought to be respected.
Several schools in Kodagu had embarked upon taking out “Aahara Jatha” (food processions) and organised essay, elocution and other competitions to motivate the organisers to end wastage of food in the kalyana mantaps, hostels and during various other functions. The officials of the Government departments such as Backward Communities and Minorities, Integrated Tribal Welfare Project and Social Welfare, have been asked to save food in the hostels being run by them.
