There once there lived an old lady who was very rich. She was very careful about her house work so she employed many servants to get her work done on time.
The old lady had a rooster which would crow loudly at 4:00 a.m. every day. That's when she would wake her servants up to begin their work but the idle servants did not like it.
“Why do you wake me up when I am fast asleep early morning?” asked one servant. All the others also asked the same question. The lady retorted saying, “You should get up when the rooster crows. There is a lot of work to do. Besides, you are doing the work slowly. Unless you get up early, you cannot finish it in time.”
The indolent workers had no choice but to wake up at 4:00 a.m. Eventually, one of the servants said, “I've an idea to escape from this difficulty”.
“What is your idea?” another servant eagerly enquired. “Let us kill the rooster,” he replied. “That is a good idea,” all the others agreed.
One night, when the old lady was fast asleep, the servants caught hold of the rooster and cut its head off and buried it in the backyard.
The old lady felt sad when she heard about this. The next day onwards, since she had no rooster to tell time, she mistook the hour and woke the servants up in the middle of the night to begin their work.
