Unlucky for some, but lucky for others the 13 Edition of The Hindu Young World Quiz held in Kamarajar Arangam proved lucky for Loyola School, Thiruvanathapuram. Champions for four years in a row they swept the score board with a whooping total of 151. The coincidence is that the first edition of The Hindu Young World quiz held to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Young World also saw Loyola School as the winners and chief guest then was cricketer and former selector of BCCI Krishnamachari Srikkanth.

Win some, lose some

Sharing his experiences with us, Krish told the audience that a quiz is no different from a cricket match. “You win some, you lose some. But what’s most important is the passion and the spirit to participate in extra curricular activities to make sure you fit in this competitive world.”

The Hindu Young World quiz has grown in the past 13 years to become India’s largest inter-school live quiz. Quizmaster V.V. Ramanan, an integral part of the quiz since its inception once again played host with remarkable questions to keep everyone hooked.

After breezing through 15 cities the grand finale was held in Chennai. The regional finals, which was held earlier in the day, saw 876 teams participating, thus breaking all earlier records. The teams that made it to the grand finale were Vidya Niketan, Coimbatore, Jeevana School, Madurai, Vidya Mandir, Salem, Chinmaya Vidyaya, Chennai, Loyola School, Thiruvananthapuram and Bhavan’s School, Kochi in a battle of the brains to win the title. Similar to the previous years’ format the teams were shown a grid made up of 24 questions and a celebrity picture under it.

Questions from various genres include Harry Potter curses, books, capitals mythology, and history. It was a buzzer round and Aditchandra, and Ganesh D., Std. IX students from Loyola School went into attack from the very first question where they were asked to name the only Olympic event in which the competitors are required to wear a top hat. Gaining ground by answering it as a dressage event they began to dominate the scoreboard. The picture clue too helped Loyola School stay on top as they guessed the Korean pop sensation PSY right. With most of the teams other than Salem guessing it right it proved an easy one.
