Does the deep blue fascinate you? Imagine diving into the vast ocean and coming in contact with a completely new world! Try snorkelling – it means swimming underwater with a diving mask, (which is a shaped tube called a snorkel) and wearing fins. If the water you are swimming in is cold, then you wear a wetsuit. As you use a snorkel you get to see the wonders of the sea. But where do you get to do this in India
Here is a list...
Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Probably the most sought after snorkelling and scuba diving destination in the country, these islands have rich underwater life and some of the rarest varieties of corals. You can try snorkelling in Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Carbyn’s Cove Tourism Complex and Havelock. Some other islands also have snorkelling from dawn to dusk depending on the weather. Diving introduces you to a variety of colourful fish, rare coral reefs, mysterious remains of sunken ships and more.
Lakshadweep Islands: This little stretch of islands is fast becoming the water sports capital of the country and underwater sea sports is gaining popularity too. With a large coastline, coral islands, and great variety in the marine life, Lakshadweep is a fascinating scuba diving destination.
Goa: This is perhaps the next popular place for diving. The sea life in the waters is similar to that in the Maldives and hence, it has been getting a lot of divers lately. But wait — the waters here don’t just boast of marine life, but also Spanish, Portuguese and World War II ship wreckages. How exciting is that! Grand Island is a popular diving spot and when you are off on your adventure, try not to miss spotting Suzy's Wreck, Davy Jones’ Locker, Sail Rock, Turbo Tunnel, Surge City, Uma Guma Reef and Bounty Bay.
Angria Bank: This is a lesser-known but world-class diving site near Goa. It is a treasure trove of corals and fishes. Diving here is an unforgettable experience. The government, in fact, is now spending huge amounts of money trying to promote water tourism here.
Puducherry: A relatively new diving site, but its popularity is increasing day-by-day. The waters are rich with marine life and some sites like Grouper’s Gorge, Shy Shark Reef, Tabletops, The Hole and the legendary Aravind’s Wall are worth exploring.
Be prepared
> Make sure your gear is working and in perfect condition.
> Unless you are physically fit or certified, do not dive without a professional by your side.
> Wait at least two hours after eating before you dive.
> If you can invest in an underwater camera, then you have a souvenir without disrupting the underwater life.
