Sensitising the youngsters on energy, environment

With the conventional sources of energy fast depleting and indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources causing irreversible damages to the nature, energy efficiency and conservation of environment are the most important issues that can influence the future of mankind.

With the objective of sensitising the youngsters on these issues at an early stage, the Railway School English Medium High School located on Gadag Road in Hubli had organised an Inter School Science Exhibition for the high school students of Hubli. Apart from Energy and Environment, the organisers had chosen “Chandrayaan” (moon mission by ISRO) as the third project.

Apart from the host school, thirteen schools from Hubli including Lamington Boy’s High School, St. Mary’s High School, Chinmaya Vidyalaya, St. Andrew’s High School, City High School, St. Michael’s High School, M.R. Sakhare English Medium School, SWRWWO School, Basel Mission Girls’ High School, St. Mary’s High School, Nirmala K. Thakkar High School, Shantiniketan English Medium School, Sri Vivekananda High School participated in the exhibition. A total of thirty students exhibited 25 models, which they had prepared under the guidance of their teachers.

The exhibits included models on energy efficiency, unconventional sources of energy like wind and solar power, environmental damages caused by exploitation of natural resources and the models of the recent “Chandrayaan” mission by the Indian Space Research Organisation.

Additional Divisional Railway Manager of Hubli Division of South Western Railway Premchand, who was present during the inaugural and valedictory ceremony stressed the need for having energy efficient systems, that caused minimal damage to the nature. Principal Rukmini P. Vadavi said the exhibition was meant for providing students a platform to put to use what they had learnt in their classes. Thimoty T. Gonmei, Manager of the host school and others were present. Science lecturers B.D. Huddar and N.D. Morab were judges for the event.

The host Railway English Medium High School bagged the first prize for the exhibit on the topic “Energy” prepared by C.H. Rachael. B.Swetha of Sri Vivekananda High School, and Abhishek Bhandari of St. Michael’s High School won the first prizes in “Environment” and “Chandrayaan” categories respectively.
