The second edition of Young Picassos with a Heart saw an enthusiastic crowd of people flocking to see their artistic expressions on display.

Remember the Young World painting competition last year? Did you know that while you painted the different themes your painting might be one of the chosen few to be sold and that the proceeds would go towards a worthy cause? That's exactly what happened at the second edition of Young Picassos, Art with a Heart exhibition cum sale of the paintings that was recently inaugurated at the Apparao Gallery, Nungambakkam.

Special guest Sasi Satish, wife of D. Satish Babu, Managing Director, UniverCell, was stunned by the riot of colours that was all around her. “Kids are so clever,” she commented as she slowly did the rounds. Actor Sivakumar who was the chief guest, couldn't stop himself from frequently saying: “Each one is a masterpiece, the judges must have had a tough time to choose the winner. Look at this one…” he said crossing over to the other wall. He remarked, “Look at the colour combination, it is difficult to judge as each one of them has its own distinct style.”

For Sajna, Std. VIII, SBOA School, Anna Nagar, the invite to the exhibition came as a pleasant surprise. “I never expected this.” She meant the exhibition, where her own painting hung in pride of place as she had won the first prize in the junior section. “This is the first time I have taken part in a competition that has a purpose. I am inspired to do better next time,” she smiled.

Actor Sivakumar, a painter of repute himself, passed out with a first class from the Government School of Fine Arts. Doodling from the age of five led him to take up an art course later in life. He strongly felt that kids must keep practice and painting, as continuous drawing helps one to improve oneself (he has done 5000 sketches in the six years of his course), it refines the art form and it tempers one's mind — “You are your own master,” he said.

And so, at this year's Young World Painting Competition, when you have your blank canvas before you, be inspired to give of your best, for your composition of colours has the power to reach out and help someone.
