Investiture ceremony, the formal appointment of captains and prefects impresses upon students that with position comes responsibility. The academic year begins with the investiture ceremonies. And, at schools that are part of The Hindu's NIE programme, new leaders eagerly wait to take on the mantle of responsibility.

Fresh start

Schools conduct secret ballot elections for the school cabinet. School captains, vice-captains, pupil's secretaries, sports leaders, band leaders, house leaders, discipline leaders and many others who will expand the efforts of the teachers in running the day-to-day activities of a school are elected through the process.

The much-awaited results will be announced during the morning assembly after counting the votes. The office-bearers of school cabinets share what the new responsibility means to them and how the school has helped them to become leaders. “The responsibility has lifted my spirits and it is very encouraging,” said Melvina Smitha, school captain, Bishop Cotton Girls' High School.

At Sudarshan Vidya Mandir, Aashish. U. R., the newly elected school captain administered the oath to the school cabinet members. The school cabinet expressed their aspirations and plans for the well-being of the school and pledged to take the school to greater heights. “The life of a leader is one of initiative and reward, one of sowing and reaping and one of enterprising and growing. We have faith in our abilities and focus on our purpose. We want to be role models for other students,” Aashish believes.

The new leaders were also told that they must shoulder their responsibilities in earnest and at schools they have great opportunity to imbibe leadership qualities.
