Recently I happened to visit the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary at Palakkad, because I won a competition conducted by a newspaper and the Forest Department. We arrived at the sanctuary by evening and were welcomed by a fresh breeze.
The next day we journeyed into the forest. We saw many animals and birds. We took photographs. We were able to appreciate the beauty of the whole place from the Dam View Point and the Valley View Point. Parambikulam Assitant Officer, Mr. Manoj, gave us a lot of information and took a class on forest related topics. We were excited to learn that one of the world’s tallest and biggest tree is called ‘Kannimara trak’ and was grown here.
After dinner, we watched an interesting movie on animals. Early the next morning we went on a trek. It was a wonderful walk. We were guided by the forest guard Mr. Selvam who gave us detailed descriptions of everything we saw.
We also saw the Hulliya Dam constructed by the earlier Madras Government. We then visited the Forest Museum where we could find many skeletons of animals that used to inhabit the forest.
On the last day there was a conference and the winners received certificates. After lunch we bid goodbye to the beautiful forest.
