“If I were the editor of Young World , I would publish this newspaper all over the world,” wrote one aspiring guest editor.
Others wrote: “I want to design a page on astrology and educational trips”; “I would design cartoon strips with anecdotes from the lives of great people, to inspire young readers.”
Be a Guest Editor , is what our write up read. And we had entries from students in Stds V, VI and VII. The four winners were — Malaika Abha Shankar from Bangalore, Milan Joby from Ernakulam, Adishree Srinivasan from Chennai and Adit Acharya from Coimbatore.
They were invited to the Young World Chennai city office for an entire day to join the editorial team to bring out the Children’s Day special issue.
What they say:
MALAIKA ABHA: I was surprised and excited about being selected to be a Guest Editor. My page was Globe Trot and I learnt how to find news under many categories like sport, science and so on. My favourite part was selecting the pictures for each piece.
MILAN JOBY: I was very happy when my mother told me that I was selected to be a Guest Editor for Young World. I was working on Page 14, which is called Out Of The Box. I learnt about how to write a head. I even typed out the heading and the headdeck.
ADIT ACHARYA: I was filled with joy on hearing that I would be an editor for a day. I was also excited about meeting my relatives in Chennai. I was given Page 7, which is the photo feature. I learnt about places, activities and improved my vocabulary. My favourite part was also selecting the pictures.
ADISHREE SRINIVASAN: I never expected that I would be a Guest Editor with the Young World . I was very excited and jumped about when my mother told me that I was selected. I was singing and dancing. At last, it was November 7. I had applied for leave at my school and arrived at The Hindu office. People in the office were very jovial and it was an interesting experience. I got to design Page 1. The main story was a preview of the quiz. I chose the colours for the headlines, the pictures and learnt how to edit the story.
