Monet, Picasso, da Vinci, Van Gogh — do these names sound familiar? They are some of the most renowned artists that the world has seen. If a picture is worth a 1000 words, then, these artists have definitely outdone themselves. Their works have revolutionised art over the years and have continued to capture and intrigue not only art aficionados, but others as well.

While da Vinci’s Mona Lisa , with her mysterious smile, has always left people puzzled, Van Gogh’s Starry Night has a calming effect. The swirly strokes of the brush apparent in the painting, the way the colours blend and the vibrant manner something as dark as the night has been portrayed so colourfully, are what sets it apart.

Did you know that not all famous painters liked painting at first go? For instance, painting was not Van Gogh’s first love. As a youth, he was more inclined towards religion and went on to study Theology. He even tried his hand at being a preacher in Brussels, but failed to pass the course. He eventually found his calling, and his Starry Night , Bedroom in Aries and others bear ample testimony to it.

French Impressionist artist Monet’s genius would have remained a secret, if, out of sheer boredom at school, he hadn’t taken to drawing caricatures of friends and colleagues. His painting, Poppies in the field is known for its rich hues. So vivid are the colours that one can almost see them swaying gently in the breeze.

Here’s a set of paintings that have charmed people through the ages. Take a look, let the colours capture your senses!
