Do you know that the word grateful is one of the most commonly misspelt words in English language? The confusion arises while spelling the grate in grateful. We often tend to spell it great and then add ful to it. But, greatful is not a word at all.

The word grate in grateful is derived from the Latin gratus meaning pleasing, agreeable, thankful and so on. Though the word grate , meaning thankful, is no longer used in English, the word grateful still remains.

So, remember, the word grate in grateful has nothing to do with great but has everything to do with gratitude. And gratitude is the greatest of all virtues!

(Grate also means to reduce food to small shreds by rubbing it on a grater; and make an unpleasant rasping sound.)
