The children loved their teacher and wanted to honour her on Teachers’ Day. Their teacher loved flowers, and each of them decided to bring her some flowers.

“Since Onam is also celebrated in a day or two, why don’t we make a rangoli with flowers for our teacher?” suggested Kunal.

The children agreed to bring flowers the next day, but not Vindhya. She did not like working as a team. She wanted to do her work on her own.

Left out

The next day, when Vindhya entered the class, her classmates were working on the rangoli. It looked very nice. Vindhya’s pride got  the better of her and she refused to join them. She knew that she was a brilliant student and wanted to be different. But when she saw the jasmine, marigold, iris, gulmohar, lily, ashoka, tulip, orchid, lotus and orchid aesthetically arranged, her heart skipped a beat as she realised that everyone had brought flowers for the rangoli . Vindhya herself, had brought only a red rose for her teacher which she had picked from her garden.

“But how will it fit in with the rangoli ?” she wondered. As she didn’t want to cut a sorry figure, she hid the flower.

The children waited with bated breath. When the teacher entered the classroom, she was surprised to see the rangoli . She was delighted by the children’s gesture. However, she saw a tense Vindhya sitting alone with a rose on her desk. She immediately understood what had happened. She smiled at Vindhya. Encouraged, Vindhya brought the rose and presented it to her. She felt it was nothing in comparison to the rangoli .

The teacher held Vindhya’s rose in her hands and she said, “Children, your rangoli  looks wonderful but, one thing is missing. She then  placed the rose in the centre. The children were surprised to see that the rose fitted in so well with their rangoli . Vindhya was delighted, for she had never thought that her lone flower would blend so well. Happy that she was accepted into the efforts of the class, she felt a change of heart, and realised the value of team work. Together, the children happily wished their teacher, “Happy Teachers’ Day”.
