This summer holidays, I joined the eco club in my apartment complex. The club was started by a few adult volunteers to actively engage the children in our neighbourhood. Children are free to join the club any time with no membership fee. The club members meet once every week and do many activities to save our environment.

Some of the activities that we did in the club were poster-making for a given topic, composting and making paper bags. Composting was fun wherein we all carried our kitchen resources — we don’t call it kitchen waste because it is like gold for plants — and put them in the composting unit. This taught us about how we can reduce our daily waste and make a usable resource.

During the bag making activity, we were told that we can make bags with newspapers and donate to vendors and discourage them to give plastic carry bags to the customers. This will help in reducing plastic. There are going to be more such exciting activities like nature walk, tree walk, tree census (counting the trees in our complex garden), lake walk and herbal gardening.
