“Education is no more a want, it's the basic necessity of life,” said actor Suriya at a recent gathering . And following up on that is Agaram Foundation started by Sivakumar. He has been helping the growth of education in the state for nearly 32 years now. This year too the trust recognised deserving candidates who were given cash awards for scoring high marks and as an aid to help them pursue further education.
Gomathi, X, CBM Higher secondary School said she was overjoyed and very happy because at last her efforts have been rewarded. “I got good marks — 461/500.” This happened on a day when I had gone for my usual check-up to the Cancer Institute in Adyar. We were waiting for the doctor when we met someone who told us about the Trust. He helped us fill the form and apply. I have blood cancer and it was diagnosed last year. I love to study and want to pursue higher studies. My parents have already spent a lot on my education and my treatment, so this was a god send. He told us they would help. We wrote a letter and sent them my certificates. They selected me. Suriya himself gave me a cheque for Rs. 5000.” Gomathi has now joined Std XI, in the same school and is studying Biology.
Gomathi is just one such child. There were 22 others who were awarded Rs. 10000 each. Addressing the issue of education, especially for underprivileged students be it in the city or the villages Agaram Foundation wants to help many more deserving children with quality education. More than 150 students are now able to attend college because of Vidhai, a wing of the Agaram Foundation.
Professor C. Rajkumar, Vice Chancellor OP Jindal Global University and the Dean of Jindal Global Law School the chief guest addressed the gathering.
