Curious to know the techniques of sky gazing or map reading but don't know where to learn them? Interested in lives of luminaries but find huge volumes of biographies boring? Help is at hand as a lot of interesting and illustrated books can be seen in the leading bookstores in the city.

Find shelves full of books on facts, seasons, insects, art, culture and civilizations. For history buffs there are books on lives of Mughals, Indian Freedom Struggle and ancient worlds along with histories of other countries. Books on the pyramids in Egypt or Machu Pichu in Peru can “take” you across miles. General knowledge books are a hot favourite with students.

A variety

So are self help books that teach cooking, crafts and gardening. The puzzle books, including jigsaw, Sudoku, words puzzles, are for those who want challenge. And for the travel time in school bus, there is the slick handbook available on a variety of topics, from history to science, in a language that is easy to understand and size that is small, would certainly help you to gain knowledge without help from elders.

If you want to start with non fiction and not sure where to start, here is a volume you can begin with. “Letters From a Father to His Daughter, a series of letters from Jawaharlal Nehru to his daughter Indira Gandhi.

“Words of Freedom” is a series featuring landmark speeches and writings of freedom fighters. The 14 visionaries featured in this series include Rabindranath Tagore, Sarojini Naidu, Sardar Vallabhhai Patel and E.V. Ramasami Periyar.
