‘Sustainable building services' is a relatively new concept catching on in the Indian construction landscape. Within building services, new roles are emerging — renewable energy, sustainability, low carbon technologies, energy management and carbon credits. With buildings accounting for around 50 per cent of all carbon emissions, building-services engineers play a significant role in combating climate change. A concerted effort is what it takes and in a step towards this objective, IAPMO-India launched a green plumbing code supplement, “Uniform Mechanical Code – India” (UMC-I), the most comprehensive document ever created in the history of India to outline, standardise and prescribe sustainable building practices.
