The monotony of your home can be broken with a few of these budget-friendly ideas.

Have you saved your children’s art work? You can now take them out and showcase them. Remember to include pages from their colouring books as you set about framing them. These pictures can also be affixed on the refrigerator using magnets or displayed using clothes pegs. Also consider having a file on hand, and replacing these images periodically. This idea can be a great conversation-starter.

In this world of social networking, it is a given that we all take lots of photographs. It is, however, important that we do not forget the older albums with pictures of our childhood. Sit down on a Saturday afternoon and make your own family collage. Carefully choose your pictures, and paste them on a chart paper. While it can be displayed at a location of your choice, you will also enjoy the whole process, as you relive those precious moments.

Bringing potted plants indoors livens up a space instantly. Garden fresh flowers can be placed in tall jars, tin cans, baskets or vases around the home. This elevates the mood of residents, and brings the home a sense of calm and peace. A few flowers with leaves of varied colours and shapes make for a great arrangement.

Does your son have a stamp collection? Or perhaps your husband has stored his coin collection in the attic? Bring them out and display them in a corner of the home. Collections are works of pride and joy, and make for great displays.

You can also try to make a 3D scrapbook. It can be of your child’s school life, your family trip to some place or even about a particular person who has inspired you. Choose a bottle with a wide mouth in an attractive shape. Begin adding relevant things inside, and slowly, your new scrapbook will come to life. For instance, objects that the scrapbook can contain are a tissue from a hotel you visited on a trip, the visiting card of your friend who lives there, a coin, a stamp, a train ticket, a receipt, and a bill. Once you have put together your things, close the mouth with a cloth from the place itself and tie a ribbon for extra effect. Label it with the date of your visit and any other details that are of interest to you. This is your work, remember to make it personal.

Colourful cushions provide an instant facelift. Use kitchen towels, old saris or dupattas to make your own cushions for a unique touch. These can also be thrown on a divan or a bed.
