Because it’s your first home and you’re probably paying off tall EMIs, decorating on a budget is a crucial concern. Not to mention, you also don’t have enough knowledge about the basic utilities you need to attend to before moving on to the interior embellishments.

The simple solution? Research and prioritize.

Ask around, read up and think carefully about the possible issues you may have to tackle in your new home. Is the plumbing good enough? Will you need an inverter? Is the paint chipping already? Look around the house before you set it up and begin your list of do’s and don’ts based on your priorities. Here’s a look at a few prime concerns-

Budget

The Do’s

If your budget is limited, there’s really no harm in looking at secondhand furniture. Most online portals have an option to return the piece if you’re not satisfied with it. Besides, you can always refurbish an old piece of furniture to have it go with your room. It lends the item your own individual touch while going easy on the pocket.

If you must spend, invest in long term items such as appliances, lights and fittings or the king size bed with storage that you intend to use for the next ten years.

The Don’ts

Don’t spend too much on items that you are likely to change with changing trends. For instance, the curtain, the couch or the coffee table.

If your budget is limited, it makes no sense to spend on that false ceiling. Save up for that dining table instead.

Don’t hesitate to bargain. It’s quite normal to get a 10 to 15% discount on your high value purchases.

Small Spaces

The Do’s

It helps if your furniture also provides storage space.

Move the curtain rod closer to the ceiling. The added length takes attention away from the minimal floor space.

Wall racks or shelves too free up the floor by drawing the eye up.

Mirrors and glass help make a room look bigger than its actual size.

The Don’ts

Don’t invest in heavy furniture as it makes the room look smaller. Opt for sleeker lines.

Don’t opt for overly creative wallpapers or paint without due consideration. It often robs the room of its openness.

Miscellaneous

The Do’s

Tackle one room at a time to know what you will need without feeling overwhelmed.

Accessorizing your room with little knick-knacks such as picture frames, vase etc. adds character to your living space without costing much.

The Don’ts

Don’t buy everything you need from the same store, be it appliances or furniture. Your home will end up looking bland and you’ll miss out on other interesting items and offers that might be out there.

Don’t try and accomplish everything all at once. Leave some scope for addition later on. It’s only when you actually start living in your home, will you feel the need for many other things. So be patient.
