An expert in constructing flyovers and bridges, and an iconic structure with innovative construction methods hog the limlight
The formation day of Indian Concrete Institute, September 7, is celebrated as “Concrete Day” all over India. The Indian Concrete Institute (Karnataka-Bangalore Centre) celebrates the occasion by giving away two awards every year. This year over 600 engineers, architects and constructors took part in the function.
This year ICI (KBC)-UltraTech Endowment Award for Outstanding Concrete Engineer of Karnataka 2011 went to A.T. Samuel, Executive Director, STUP Consultants, for his contribution to the design of concrete structures such as flyovers, bridges, under-passes, viaducts and aquaducts.
Criteria: A personality residing in Karnataka who has done significant contributions to the cause of concrete construction and design / research and development / dissemination of knowledge / publications / innovative use of concrete.
The ICI (KBC)-Birla Super Endowment Award for Outstanding Concrete Structure of Karnataka 2011 was awarded to World Trade Centre-Rajajinagar, Bangalore. Owners: Brigade Enterprises, Bangalore; Architects: Venkatraman Associates, Bangalore; Structural Consultants: Chethana Engineers Services, Bangalore; Builder/Contractor: B.E. Billimoria & Co., Mumbai. There were 10 other entries in this category across Karnataka.
Criteria: The structure should be in Karnataka and not older than three years as on September 7, 2011. It shall have been built using concrete as one of the prime construction material.
The structure should have outstanding features either in design or innovative construction methods or new concrete materials and large volume usage of concrete or all the above.
Born on September 7, 1982, ICI is a registered professional body of over 4,500 individuals and organisations in 27 centres across India, with headquarters in Chennai.
ICI-Karnataka (Bangalore) Centre conducts several programmes during the year. It has a membership of over 500 with over 250 members in Bangalore city.

ICI-KBC organised ‘DEMINAR' — a national seminar and demonstration on technology, products, equipment in concrete and construction in the years 2009 and 2011.
With support from Grasim Industries and Ultra Tech Cements, Concrete Day is one of the biggest events for ICI-KBC.
