All rooms are not created equal and this is quite true of small spaces, which typically need less furniture. Some rooms can still present unique challenges. From taking the vertical route of opting for multi-purpose furniture for your living spaces to creating more storage, master the art of ‘space-craft’ with these design suggestions.

Think above the box With a small apartment, every inch needs to be used efficiently, a principle that should apply to every home. One key solution — a loft bed that made room for a walk-in closet below. Another fantastic use of space — stairs that double as drawers.

Clear floor space How much space you have is often a matter of how much space you feel you have. At the top of the list — clear as much off the floor as possible. That could mean cantilevered cabinets in the bathroom so you can still see the tiles. It could also mean something as simple as having chairs, couches and other furniture with exposed feet instead of covers or other material that go all the way to the floor. The more floors you can see, the more open and airy a room will feel.

Open the windows Obstruction of windows, especially in a smaller space, is not advisable as it tends to make a small room look even smaller, that includes curtains that obstruct the windows when pulled back, plants on the window sill and even bookshelves placed closely that they cut the view when looked at from an angle. Windows enhance the view of the outside, giving you that sense of the long view.

Go vertical Another way to maximise space is to ensure the floor is clear of storage, such as bookcases, magazine baskets or racks and instead create shelves and cabinets on walls. By moving items up from the floor you also improve the feel of a room. All the new found space is likely to tempt you to add to the room, which is very avoidable.

Creating boundaries Frame your bed with customised cabinets that also work as the headboard. A mix of open and closed storage lets you display what you want while stashing the rest. Painting the headboard zone in a neutral colour keeps the space from being overwhelming.

Wall as canvas

Instead of painting an accent wall, cover it with arty or playfully printed wallpaper, a smart aesthetic technique to use on a small wall space.

Be bold with colour Lastly, go all out and have fun with bright colours for your rooms, from a wide variety available in the market. Paint a small bedroom in a cheerful hue to make an impact.
