August 12 - ‘Rafta Rafta’ is a comedy that revolves around a newly-wed couple and their meddlesome families. Atul Dutt and his bride Lisa Lim are short of cash and have to live with the Dutts, a stereotypical Indian family headed by a whisky-loving, bhangra-dancing, pompous father (Eeshwar), and a sarcastic mother (Lopa). The beleaguered couple also has to deal with the incessant intrusions of Lisa’s parents, Peter Lim, who can’t stand the idea of being separated from his daughter, and Laura Lim, who can’t keep her nose out of her daughter’s affairs, particularly those pertaining to the bedroom. Will this marriage survive the onslaught of the personal dysfunctionalities being hurled at it and have a happy ending?
The play, written by British-Indian Ayub Khan-Din, won the Laurence Olivier award for Best New Comedy 2008. HuM Theatre first performed ‘Rafta Rafta’ in Singapore in May 2010 where it was critically acclaimed and well received.
