Perch, a Chennai-based theatre group, brings to Bangalore its latest production Jujubee , a children’s production. The play will appeal to children and adults alike for it has been designed as a visual treat, complete with larger-than-life puppets, colourful masks, music and dance.
Rajiv Krishnan, the director, speaks of the behind-the-scenes endeavour. “Maryruth Stine, from the United States, conducted a workshop on puppets with us, and so we decided to work with puppets and masks for the first time in this production.”
Jujubee , written in Tanglish, a combination of Tamil and English, tells the tale of an evil king and an unlikely heroine. Perch’s previous productions such as Ms. Meena , Moonshine and Skytoffee , SangathiArinhya ! and KiraKozhambu were appealing for their unique storylines and presentation.
Further, their multi-lingual plays have won mass appreciation, besides critical praise.
Initially, Rajiv referred to folk tales, but later the members of Perch decided to write a story themselves.
Rajiv, who is well known in the city’s theatre circuit, says that it has always been a pleasure to perform in Bangalore for its discerning audience. “Spaces such as Ranga Shankara have made theatre more accessible,” he adds.
Anand Sami, Karuna Amarnath and Srikrishna Dayal will perform in Jujubee . The props have been designed by Arti Sundar.
