Director Ranjith Sankar says that Punyalan Agarbathis, which reaches theatres on Friday, tells the tale of an entrepreneur who sets out on an unusual business venture.
“Although Punyalan Agarbathis is a light-hearted entertainer, it deals with certain relevant social issues. I believe that even serious issues can be presented effectively with a tinge of humour and we have attempted to do so here,” says the film’s director, Ranjith Sankar.
Punyalan Agarbathis, which releases today, has Jayasurya playing Joy Thakkolkkaran, a Thrissur-based youngster. Nyla Usha, who made her movie debut in Kunjananthante Kada, essays Joy’s wife, Anu.
Travails of entre preneurship
Joy is a wannabe entrepreneur with an optimistic outlook. He has tried his hand at several business ventures in the past and his latest venture is making incense sticks from elephant dung. But the going gets tough when he is unable to find enough raw material.
Ranjith, who debuted in Mollywood with the well-appreciated Passenger, followed by Arjunan Sakshi and then Molly Aunty Rocks, says: “At times, when certain movies fail to work, we start thinking about what went wrong. The result is that you make films based on what works at the moment.”
Jayasurya, who is co-producing the film with Ranjith, has also rendered a song for it.
“Of course, he has sung it very well. But I have no qualms about admitting that the real purpose was to make it sound different, to stand out from the crowd. With a rather surprising hike in the number of films being made in Malayalam this year, it is quite challenging to make and market a film. But then, from the moment we decide to make a story into a film until it reaches the theatres, we have to try hard to make it the best,” says the director. Another song, a paean to Thrissur, is also acing the charts.
Punyalan Agarbathis has been produced under the banner of Dreams N’ Beyond.
Sujith Vasudev is the cinematographer and Bijibal has scored the music.
Quiz Ranjith about his plans for his next film and he says: “I really want to make a love story . But I will decide on what my next film is only after I discover what is the response to this one.”
