Gulshan Grover was in New Delhi the other day as part of the press promotion of his film “Baat Bann Gayi”. Here he speaks about his double role in the recently released romantic comedy. Grover asserts that whatever the budget of a film, what matters to him in accepting a contract is the nature of the role. Excerpts from a conversation:
You are playing a double role in your upcoming film “Baat Bann Gayi”. What is the Tell me something more about the story of this film about?
Yes I am playing a double role in this film. It’s a romantic comedy where I and Ali both are in dual roles and both my characters are distinct from each other. One of my characters is that of a professor and the other is of a gay choreographer. So due to, this lot’s of confusion and trouble arises and the viewers will see a hilarious ride, because it’s a double comedy as well as double trouble.
How challenging was it to play two distinct characters simultaneously and that too in a romantic comedy film?
“Baat Bann Gayi” is a low budget film, so it was not easy to keep things easy. One of my characters is that of a professor who is the heroine’s brother, and my personality is entirely different from it. Within few minutes I had to change my character which was not that easy as changing one’s getup and clothes. Although it was challenging, I played both the roles with full interest.
You are famous for playing the role of villain in Bollywood cinema. Don’t you think you have put yourself into a groove over the years? grooved yourself in the character of a villain over the years?
I have no qualms about being recognised as an on-screen villain. I put my efforts to make the image of a bad man and I am happy that people have been loving me for each and every role I played. I am a commercial actor and every role for me comes out after a thought process and I am glad today that I have made a brand for myself.
These days you are promoting lots of small budget films. and You had won the Stardust Award too for your character in another small budget film, “I am Kalam”. share some experiences and particular reasons for such small budget films. Tell us about your penchant for small budget films
I have done more than 400 films, and in this long journey of mine “I am Kalam” is very special to me. Although I have received international awards also, getting awards for a character in a small budget film is very significant to me. That’s why I see the character only, whatever may be the budget of the film.
Indian cinema has been entertaining its audiences for decades since a long time. What different and specific things do you think needs to be done in order to enhance our industry in every respect?
Definitely each time you look at things, you will find enough scope for improvements. Everyone as a unit and family always looks for corrections if anything goes wrong in this industry as far as films are concerned. Young talent is coming into our industry and providing more diversity to the film industry. We have crossed the boundaries and it will cover many more in future. Everyone today, either British or from other European countries, likes to watch Bollywood films with much interest.
