An edgy scene is going to be shot inside one of the unoccupied blocks of a new hospital complex in Kochi. The shot is for director V.K. Prakash’s (VKP) new film Nirnayakam . The scene features Asif Ali and Malavika Mohanan, the lead pair in this film, looking at a politician walking away with his cronies and a few cops. Asif tells them to stop as he walks towards them with a determined look.

“This movie is mainly about relationships. It delves into the many layers of relationships such as that between a mother and a son, a father and a son, a young girl and her grandfather and even the commitment towards one’s profession. It also questions the ways one deals with various situations. When is it that one should react to a particular social issue? How to rekindle a relationship? These are some of the questions tackled in the movie,” says VKP, as the crew go in for a close-up shot.

Asif plays the role of Ajay, who comes from a broken home. His parents, played by Prem Prakash and Tisca Chopra, have been living apart for the past 17 years. Ajay grew up with his mother in Mysore and is a cadet of the National Defence Academy.

After visiting his mother, he travels to his father’s place in Kerala where he gets entangled in some unprecedented situations.

“Ajay always wanted to become a soldier and joins the NDA to fulfil his ambition. I attended a workshop with the rest of the actors to prepare for the role. In fact, it’s the first time I have prepared this extensively for a role,” says Asif.

Malavika, last seen with Dulquer Salmaan in Pattam Pole, says her character, Saral, is a Malayali girl brought up in Mysore. “She is a ballet dancer and an anchor in Ajay’s life,” says Malavika. She studied mass media and nurtures dreams of becoming a filmmaker.

“Acting was not on my list, but now, I am serious about it. I want to be in films and I don’t have an alternate career plan in mind.”

Nirnayakam has been produced under the banner of Jairaj Films. Nedumudi Venu, Shankar Ramakrishnan and Saiju Kurup are part of the cast. Bobby and Sanjay are the scenarists. Shehnad Jalal wields the camera, while M. Jayachandran scores the music. Stills are by Anas Padannayil.
