The birth anniversary of legendary singer M. S. Subbulakshmi was celebrated in good spirit.
The birth anniversary of the legendary singer M.S. Subbulakshmi was celebrated at the Government College of Music and Dance, Vijayawada.
The event was organised by the A.P. Department of Culture and the Music College. T.S. Ramachandra Rao, a well known scholar who presided over the function paid rich tributes to the great singer.
During the function, ace mridangam artist, a Top Grade artiste and a staffer of Vijayawada Akashvani, M LN Raju was honoured with M. S. Subbalakshmi Smaraka Puraskaram.
The meeting was followed by a fine vocal concert by K. Narayanan of Chennai. With a vibrant voice Narayanan began with Bhairavi ata tala varnam Viriboni rendering it crisply in two speeds. Sogasuga Mridanga talamu (Sriranjani) was preceded by an excellent raga version. The melodic improvisations of the sangatis in the raga were pregnant with rich raga bhava.
The vocalist showed ample command over the manodharma aspects while rendering the main piece of the concert Sarojadala netri of Syamasastri in Sankarabharanam. Violinist Krishnaveni dished out a beautiful version of Sankarabharanam. Other attractive items in Narayanan’s concert were the Annamacharya keertana `Bhavayami Gopala Balam in Yamana Kalyani and the ever popular Jagadoddharana in Kafi. Narayanan had excellent support from V. Krishnaveni (violin), N.S. Kalyanaraman (mridangam) and M. Haribabu (ghatam).
