Thirupoonthuruthy Sri Narayana Tirtha Swamigal Trust in association with Narada Gana Sabha Trust and Saraswathi Vaggeyakaa Trust organised the 335th Jayanthi of Narayana Tirtha on July 20 at Narada Gana Sabha Mini Hall. The main Tarangam concert was rendered by Bombay Sisters. The Music Academy had chosen Bombay Sisters for their Sangeetha Kalanidhi award, to be conferred this year.
Veda paaraayanam by Mani Sastrigal and Nagaraja Sastrigal was followed by Dr. Ganesh’s namasankirtanam, who presented many popular Tarangams from Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini. The hall was packed despite the heavy downpour.
Prior to the concert Bombay Sisters were felicitated by N.V. Subramaniam, trustee and A. Ramji, patron of the Trust, for being designated to receive the Sangeetha Kalanidhi award by the Music Academy. They recalled the significant contributions made by the Sisters to the field of Carnatic music over the past five decades and their qualities of simplicity, modesty and generosity.
The concert included the geethams, made popular by the duo, in the earlier decades. The meaning of each song was briefly explained by Savithri Ramakrishnan. Thirupoonthuruthy V. Venkatesan thanked the gathering and the function concluded with Anjaneya Utsavam.
