The evocative title, ‘Senniramaneerae’ alludes to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The album captures the happenings of Passion Week. Listening to the songs is next best to watching a musical on the Crucifixion of Jesus and His resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Joseph Chandrakumar of Chariots of Fire Christian Media Outreach (5/3, Arunachalam Street, Purusawalkam, Chennai), the producer, has chosen timeless classics such as ‘When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,’ ‘Just As I am’ and ‘Christ The Lord is Risen Today’, tweaked them and given them a contemporary touch in Tamil. The inclusion of ‘There Is A Fountain Filled with Blood’ is a tad sad as it is more often sung at funeral services. The emphasis is on the shed blood of Jesus on the Calvary and that is the theme of the album, so it is quite in order it finds place here. ‘Maa Thooya Udhiraththaal’ is a personal favourite of mine and it has received fine treatment here.

The opening song reveals a triumphant Jesus walking into Jerusalem with the crowds in tow. ‘Osanna Jayamae’ is slightly repetitive and the popular Psalm Sunday song, ‘Osanna Paaduvom’ invites you to sing along.

Poignant rendition

Lavanya Darryl’s ‘Karthar Thuyar Thoniyaai’ is hauntingly beautiful while Amutha Moses moves you to tears with her poignant rendition of ‘Kalvari Anbai.’ The choir backing, though mostly doing unison, enhances the musical merit of the songs. ‘Andho Kalvariyil’ continues the melancholic mood while the unique orchestration for ‘Immanuvelin Rathathaal’ raises the bar.

The male voice takes over in ‘En Arul Naathaa’ while the Easter hymns bring about a dramatic change in feel and tenor. A pleasant surprise is finding the Vedanayagam Sastriar classic, ‘Vaarum Aiya Bodhagarae’ where Bhagavathar Clement’s lovely voice lends infinite charm, while the words of the keerthanai etch the message into our hearts.

The music is by Shiva and Darryl Thomas.
