It’s time once again for The Shakti Foundation’s annual fundraising concert.
The much-looked-forward-to event this year will bring together diverse styles represented by well-known musicians. Shryaahva-2014 on February 15 (7 p.m.) at The Music Academy features, Mandolin U. Shrinivas, Sivamani on percussion, Stephen Devassy on keyboard and Sheldon D’Silva on bass guitar.
Shrinivas, who has been associated with The Shakti Foundation almost since its inception, is known for his wholesome classical concerts as much as for his significant contributions to fusion ensembles. His deep connect with the mandolin strings reflects his hard training and the individualism that he brings to traditional compositions. Every year at The Shakti Foundation concert he presents a piece specially composed in memory of Velan Raghuvir (founder of the Foundation). Sivamani, the maverick percussionist, creates sounds just out of anything — vessels, buckets, plastic boxes, suitcases and of course, the drums. At his hands, rhythm becomes more a visual experience. A popular name in cross-over concerts, Sivamani celebrates beats through unusual permutations and combinations.
Stephen Devassy, the young pianist and keyboard artiste, is gradually making a name for himself as an independent performer as well as a key player in musical ensembles. He will bring to Shryaahva his eastern and western influences. Twenty nine-year-old Sheldon D’Silva learnt to play the bass guitar from his father at a young age. He was mentored by veteran jazz musician Louis Banks. When in his teens, he formed the band Nexus with Sangeet Haldipur and Gino Banks. He has performed with well-known musicians in India and abroad.
