“Bangalore always was the capital of EDM!” exclaims television host and DJ Nikhil Chinapa. “I am saying this not because I am a Bangalorean but because several international DJs who've played here have said Bangalore crowds are the most receptive and the most understanding.”
Deconstructing this, Nikhil comments, “I would blame the student community for this. I say this with my tongue firmly in my cheek. Bangalore has a great, big, student community — there are medical, engineering, management and law colleges. Young people are always willing to experiment with music. They set the trends. I would say Bangalore has always been the music capital of the country. EDM is big in the country now and so naturally Bangalore will be at the centre of things.
“The world is interested in the music scene in India right now. I am leaving for Cannes as part of HP's global influencer advisory board and then I go to Ibiza where Sunburn and I are a part of the focus panel on India at the International Music Summit, which is being moderated by Pete Tong.”
Nikhil feels that the time is ripe now not just for “bigger, but for more variety and some serious quality. It is the time for a fizzy soft drink as well as some super smooth champagne.”
Talking about the early curfew that is not conducive to night life, Nikhil says: “The city shuts down by 11.30 p.m. but Bangaloreans have found a way around it by partying earlier!
